Reading this made me reflect on the more spiritual person I was and the feeling of being centered that I used to have. I know I can get back there, but for now there are struggles in my world that weigh on me that will be hopefully resolved in August. Until then, I breath deeply and take things one day at a time.
Reading your words validates my belief that everyone who has ever crossed my path was a teacher, and the lessons big or small needed for my own growth. And I believe that lessons not learned will be repeated until they are learned.
You may think you have drifted from center but I see and feel you there and those in your community are holding that center and your place in it for you. That is another thing the Cherokee have taught me. You can never really lose your Self - just your awareness of it. And that was very reassuring to me. Sending love your way, Kimberly.
Jena! My animals were part of my making too and are included in my response from E. Jean. Animals have been a constant source of love in my life and in them I see my soul more clearly than from any human. I do not know the former friend who I hope was not attempting to be unkind but instead was pointing out how many brilliant people are on Earth whose art whether it be writing painting or another medium are never known...until post mortem. Like Emily Dickinson. Or Van Gogh. However! This cannot be you because through your art you HAVE made a difference! With Ukrainians! With me! With Animals! It may not be known by a wide berth...but it is known.
Jena! You have touched more people than you can imagine!
I know you would like to touch humans with your artistry and be paid to live as well. Sadly, for centuries, actually sunce the beginning of TIME artists have always been the strugglers. My theory is that humans fail to evolve. And when we fail to evolve, societies do not uphold what is worthy and good and right…like art, like kindness, like truth, like equity. Instead we vote in Rapist Felons, war on one another, and make people feel that their worth is through money and fame. Your writing is amazing and you should be the next Judy Bloom Teen Writer with this novel. The world is not kind. But you are. Keep Going Jena. The world has always been a stinking horrible mad house coupled with beauty We can just see it in real time now.
People like you bring the beauty. Sometimes it is hard being an Earth Angel. But please do not stop flapping your wings!
"As I’ve watched more and more storytellers, whose work I admire, join and build thriving communities here on Substack, I’ve begun to wonder about my own. I am not someone who enjoys parsing politics or writing opinion pieces. And once I get the bit of a new story between my teeth, you can bet I’ll be focused on it for awhile. I enjoy going deep, looking for taproots, and building relationships based on mutual respect, understanding, and love of the planet. Does that sound like you? If so, I’d be honored to have you as part of my community."
Thank you Auntie E. I hope my description of you and your questions wasn't offensive in any way. It's certainly honest ;-)
"Here is a response I wrote to a question posed by the ever erudite and endlessly funny E. Jean Carroll. I’ve learned to never be fooled by E. Jean’s cheerful persona and seemingly casual questions. E. Jean is a master of the sub-surface probe, which can be as painful as a dentist exposing a cavity that needs filling."
