My mom got really really sick due to diabetes - systemic MRSA infection, renal failure, and had to have part of her foot amputated. Took six years of 24/7 care to save her life. It's another long story. The thing about Hawaii is that when the islands are done with you and it's time to move, you know it. I sure do miss the dolphins though :-)

I just can't imagine what was going through her head that she wasn't willing to be there for you when you needed her most during the divore. I love that your friend had a FriendsGiving and those people have remained friends. That's remarkable.
And as for stories, that's a very special one. I've often wondered how blended families manage - how they become a family - or if they don't. Your experience was really touching and felt so real. How old were your kids at the time?
