Leaving is so hard because you can't see your options, and the ones you do see, look terrible, and then there is the fear of retaliation, usually no or not much money, and the worry about losing the kids. But what it most importantly takes to leave is what happens in your heart. A determination. A confidence. Defiance put into action. "You will never make it on your own," shouted my then-spouse. I proved them all wrong...

Yes, you described the situation very well. The friend who shared this story got out, but my mother (who was in an equally abusive marriage) never did. I admire your determination and courage so much, Aleks. AND you proved your ex wrong - BRAVO!
