Jena! I love your take down of the "Starving Artist" trope. Seth Abramson also hammers the case HOME!!! https://sethabramson.substack.com/p/what-the-recent-public-statement

Thank you! What did you think of "Defying Gravity?"

I can't wait for you to hear the music coming up. It, more than anything I can say, proves my point - musicians (and artists in general) are invaluable as they offer us a glimpse inside our own hearts, minds, and souls.

The Seth Abramson piece is terrific. I love his work. Thank you for sharing!

Wow, Molly. You got a lot of mixed messages about creativity growing up. And what was the deal with your mom trying to limit your creativity to certain areas? My mom was happy to let me draw as long as I was a kid but the second I wanted to "study" art in school she and my dad cracked down. Sigh....

IMHO we are making a HUGE mistake by not providing creative outlets, failing to teach social-emotional skills, and teaching kids to be afraid of failure. Adobe Systems has done some really interesting studies in which they asked major corporations to talk about the biggest challenges they face. Without exception, they said they were having trouble finding employees who could think outside the box, were not afraid to fail, and were willing and able to learn new things. These companies realize that innovation and collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world are vital to success.

I feel the same about not being creative. It's like I'm not really alive if I'm not creating something. I hope you'll keep writing and would love to see some of your knitting and craftwork. What kind of "art" class are you thinking of taking? Oh, and what about music?

"I love that part of music, listening and sharing." Me too! I'm very much a word person, so love writing lyrics, talking about the meaning and feelings behind music, and seeing if what a piece evokes in me is similar to what others are feeling. I think music helps increase our emotional intelligence. I'm so glad you are enjoying "Pass Along Songs," and hope you'll share any finds you make with us.

I would really like to be able to express myself musically too, but realized a while back that to be able to really let go I would have to have a high degree of proficiency. Otherwise, it would be like typing when all you know how to do is hunt and peck with two fingers. Frustrating! And singing? Well I was never that good.

I say just take the oil painting class. You don't need intellectual knowledge about art to enjoy creating it. I bet you will love it. Oil painting IS interesting. Go for it and then if you really feel compelled to "study" take the other course later.

Mothers...sigh. Today I accidentally hit and listened to a voicemail mom recorded in 2017 on X-mas. It hit me hard. My mother feared, as yours did, that I would starve as a writer and yes run off with someone (ironically it was my sister who was the one getting in trouble that way). I always thought I was a terrible disappointment to her. But listening to the love in her voice in that message was a reminder of how much she really did love me.
