Playbook for the Soul
My life is not A life
it’s a condensed, abridged, abbreviated version
of every trauma-inducing plunge
I’ve taken into duality
into the twisted, time-bound plots
that spit me out, shouting,
”Unacceptable! Do it again!”
Rinse and repeat became my mantra,
my absolution playbook,
until lifetimes were no longer solutions
and the burnt-sugar sheets of reality
shattered and fell at my feet
like empty mirrors.
I wonder, will you know me
without these words,
without labels, roles, and the searing scent
of humanity’s sweat
tainting my soul?
Will you look into the fertile brown smile of my eyes
and see invitations to play
hear me whispering, “This way - it was only a dream.” - Jena Ball

Written in response to a challenge from
who asked us to “Tell us your life story in 81 words or less!” Well I made it in exactly 81 words, but had a little more to say. That “little more” is reflected in the uncut version above. Hope you enjoy. - JenaCopyright 2024 by Jena Ball. All Rights Reserved.
Stunning and searing, Jena. You packed so much into so few words—even with those adjectives! I learn so much when I read your work. Thank you for being you.
Well done!
