Wowowow or should I say MauiWowi!!! Thank you for sharing your words and this song. I got a one ticket to Maui in 1999 at the age of 19 and moved to Lahaina. I was desperate to get clean off drugs and find my direction and way in life. Maui held me and nurtured me into a girl who was always on the run to a woman who would run miles and miles along her beach fronts; from a girl who felt she had no family into a mother of two.
And then opened me up to the most incredible cultural of Aloha and the Hawaiians shaking me east community, support and family were.
It was soul crushing to hear and see what happened with the fires. To Lahaina. I felt frozen waiting to hear that our loved ones were safe.
And those first days what I witness was a testament to the spirit and the soul of the people. To see everyone come together, to heal and help, repair and rebuild (each other) was to be reminded of the power that the people of the islands and the island itself has. Moving to witness and remember the power it holds.
Might I say analogous to the song you shared. I felt chills through my skin and it brought a huge smile to my face. The sounds grounding and soaring at once.
Thank you for this gift, Gloria. Between my crowded living conditions and the pandemic I don't have many opportunities to use my voice these days. But words have become my way to explore and share - to sing as you say - the songs that my heart is feeling. Maybe I'll have the opportunity to write more songs with some of the talented musicians I know. I hope so, but even then can't imagine being the one who actually gets up in front of others and sings them. I would like to experience the collective singing Susan Osborn taught me again. It was so magical to hear all the voices in the room falling into harmony. HUGS!
Mahalo for this tribute to our beloved Lahaina and Maui. When the news of the fires came I couldn't sleep or stop crying. Also mahalo for the link to this incredible music video. I'm sharing everywhere. So uplifting. But I'm sobbing again.
My very first Substack, August 17th, was a tribute to Maui and Lahaina. In January, we're heading back to our condo for our annual diving and whale watching. It's a magical time of year. But I'm bracing for more tears as we witness the aftermath of the destruction due to negligence of the land by those careless wealthy industrialists that you mention. But the support and hope and determination to rebuild is quintessential aloha. ♥️🌺
Just read the post and replied. It's funny how words strung together can bring you back to a place you love. I too am crying. I hope your tears are healing. Maui is and will always be home for me, and I know that she is both resilient and committed to helping raise the tiny humans who inhabit her shores into compassionate stewards of nature. HUGS!
Thank you for sharing your experience of Maui. I am always touched by your posts, even if I don't always leave a comment. That you see the world differently from me, and I don't always find your views comfortable, nudges me into healthy introspection and examination of my perspectives...and often an adjustment of how I see the world.

I’ll be quick to share it 🌈🫶🪩
Oh Ashley. This makes me so happy. Maui's love and light live on in you.
Thank you for sharing your story of healing and transformation.

Jena, your stories are songs. “Writing is the painting of the voice.” - Voltaire

Thanks for reading. Yes, the support on Substack is amazing. Truly found my tribe.
