As many of you know, the Song Flight pilot is scheduled to start at the end of January. This is an exciting and tense moment as we work to help people understand that people like Putin and his cronies (as well as other global leaders consumed with power, money, and control) are symptoms of a larger problem. That problem has its origins in our education systems, in what and how we teach our children.
The current system used around the world is based on an industrial, manufacturing model. It treats kids like cars on an assembly line, pretending their brains are like empty hard drives that can have data dumped into and regurgitated by them. It almost totally ignores emotions (labeling them “soft skills”) - despite the fact that neuroscience has proven that feelings have a dramatic impact on what and how children learn.
Emotions are hardwired together with facts when memories are created. But instead of helping kids develop the vital emotional skills - respect for differences, empathy, kindness, creative collaboration, etc. - they’ll need to become kind and competent adults, we teach them to compare, compete, and measure their self-worth based on standardized tests. From this, they learn that some are better and more deserving than others and that mistakes are to be avoided at all costs.
Is it any wonder we get emotionally damaged, selfish, power-hungry leaders? We MUST change the system even if it means a few billionaires don’t get to buy a new yacht every year.
Song Flight uses stories, songs, and creative collaboration to help kids grow into the kind of adults who will cherish all life and work to heal the planet. Please spread the word and share not only with family and friends but other organizations that have similar goals. We are better together.
