“Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.” - Hemingway
As Songs for Ukraine enters its 8th week, I’m struck again by the contrast between what we’re experiencing in the USA and what the Ukrainian people are enduring on a daily basis. I subscribe to the NPR podcast, “State of Ukraine,” and am appalled both by the human rights violations and the ability of one clearly deranged individual (and his cadre of enablers) to inflict so much suffering on others.
Meanwhile, in my own country, we are fighting a different though no less tragic war. Reproductive freedoms are being revoked, billionaires are building rockets while hundreds of thousands go hungry and lose their homes, and the rules and practices put in place to protect us are being manipulated to allow unscrupulous individuals and companies to continue to destroy the planet.
Make no mistake. The two countries and two wars are related. Whenever and wherever democracy is threatened - whether with artillery fire and bombs, misuse of legislative power, or the spread of disinformation - we all pay the price. This is why I created “Songs for Ukraine.”
SING THIS!
As our universal language, music has the power to touch and mend hearts, sway opinions, and remind us that there’s a larger song we’re collectively composing. That song is being sung in hundreds of languages and voices. It transcends differences of age, race, culture, religion, language, and gender. It is the song of our larger selves singing their way home.
This is where you come in. You may have heard that we are collecting individual, one-minute songs to create a chain of support for Ukraine. Now we will be including daily inspirations that will help you decide what songs to choose and how to sing them.
Today’s image comes from a young woman in Ukraine who is clearly struggling. If you were to sing a song to ease her pain, what would it be? Submit it to the Songs for Ukraine (1-minute or less as an MP3 file) and we’ll add it to our growing chain of powerful songs in support of the Ukrainian people: https://www.braidedlives.com/s4u-chain-submissions1
