“Our worth isn’t defined by our diversity. It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, embrace, and celebrate those differences.” - Unity
I was working on my poem about peace for Part II of our writing exercise when a friend sent me this video from a Britain’s Got Talent audition by a college group called Unity.
You’ve heard me say before that I believe people and situations enter our lives for many reasons, not the least of which is to remind us that each of us has a piece to contribute to our collective puzzle. Without you and your piece, the puzzle is incomplete.
So with that extraordinary reminder that each of us matters, please take your five-line poem and expand on it. When you are done, post it in the comment section below. Also, if you are willing, I will plant your poems in the poetry garden in Second Life where others can read and enjoy them.
To give you an example of a poem I admire about peace, I offer Wendell Berry’s, “The Peace of Wild things.” I’m still working on mine and will share when I’m done.
The Peace of Wild Things
When despair for the world grows in me,
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life, and my children’s lives may be
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water and
the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief
I come into the presence of still water
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light.
For a time I rest in the grace of the world
and am free.” - Wendell Berry
I can’t wait to read what you’ve written!
Jena
