Celebrating Take Downs
One of the things I love about cats is how good they are at being cats. Physically they are sensual, strong, and capable of acrobatic feats. They can move in silence, disappear into and behind virtually anything, and see in almost total darkness.
Cats know their place in the world and how to enjoy it. They’re focused, relentless in pursuit of their goals, and able to completely disengage once those goals are achieved. They’re capable of intense and undivided attention, unequivocal love, and complete disinterest if you fail to meet their expectations.
The cats who’ve chosen me as their person (an honor) have taught me many things - responsibility, independence, devotion, playfulness, wordless communication, and the fine art of letting go - all vital life skills for anyone hoping to survive and thrive in this world.
These lessons are not unique to felines of course. I’ve had the privilege of studying with canines, equines, dolphins, sea turtles, cows, and more recently a lovely opossum. What they’ve had in common was their ability to remind me of my place in the interconnected and interdependent web of life. When one group forgets this - seeks to disparage, bully, dominate or assert control over others in order to accrue power and wealth - it’s time to employ another effective feline tactic - Caterwauling. For those who are unfamiliar with the term simply click on the image below. Annoying and effective, yes?
Caterwauling in humans can take many forms (protests, law suits, boycotts, surveys, petitions, opinion and reported pieces, compelling articles, podcasts, interviews, concerts, and yes literal yowling) but the most direct and effective form is VOTING. When we make our desires known by speaking loudly and clearly as one voice, things change.
