“We are searchlights, we can see in the dark. We are rockets, pointed up at the stars. We are billions of beautiful hearts.” - What About Us by Pink
I’ve been wanting to write about this tingling, fizzing, buzzing energy I’m feeling between women for several months now. Do you feel it too? It crackles and sizzles with the smell of ozone just before rain, seeps out of the subject lines of emails, insisting you open them NOW, and leaps across phone lines when talking to female friends.
Most recently, the energy has begun to gather into something more - something I’ve only felt when visiting active volcanoes in Hawaii, being buzzed by Spinner dolphins, and while listening to Kamala Harris accept the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. It was a powerful, articulate, and truthful speech that recalled us to our nation’s promise and the role we play as the protectors of democracy on the world stage.
The image at the top of this page (and repeated below) is my latest attempt to capture this fizzing, tingling, sparkling energy. Let me know how, when, and where you’ve been experiencing it and what you think it means.
P.S. A small reminder from
whose poems routinely shred my ways of seeing and being in the world:“Everything but "I LOVE YOU" is small talk.” - Andrea Gibson
